Fans are waiting for Imran Tahir to feature in the IPL 2021, and the South African spinner responded to this query on Twitter, post the Chennai Super Kings’ victory over Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede.

That Imran Tahir has played only three matches last season and wasn’t included in the playing eleven for the first three games so far this season, despite being the purple cap winner of IPL 2019, helping CSK reach another final, is surprising and perplexing.

However, the number of overseas restrictions to 4 players in the line-up has MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming’s hands tied; also last year IPL was played in the UAE, and CSK has played at the Wankhede so far this year, where the spinners – barring the previous game – haven’t had much of success.

With Faf du Plessis, Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo, Shane Watson last year, and all-rounder Moeen Ali this season, the overseas slots have been occupied. Therefore Imran Tahir’s tally of 3 matches out of possible 17 games is, to an extent, explicable.

The best players are in the field and they are delivering: Imran Tahir

Imran Tahir, however, justified his absence saying that the “best players” are in the eleven and have delivered well so far – CSK has won 2 matches and is second on the points table. The 42-year-old takes immense pride in being part of the Yellow Army and assures the fans that he will give his best when he will be needed.

“Thank you sir. Best players are in the field and they are delivering and they should continue for the teams benefit. Its not about me.

“It’s about the team.Iam extremely proud to be a part of this wonderful team.If Iam needed sometime I will give my best for the team,” Imran Tahir replied to a fan on Twitter.

The Lahore-born leg-spinner recently featured in the Abu Dhabi T10 League. He hasn’t played for South Africa for about two years since the 2019 World Cup in England, however, with the T20 World Cup scheduled this year in India, Tahir would be hoping to gain some game time in the IPL before returning back to the Protea eleven.
