Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson was surprised to see the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai taking spin and absence of any dew which helped the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, MS Dhoni, to dictate terms in the 12th match of the IPL 2021.

Sanju Samson won the toss again and decided to put CSK into bat first. Despite none of their batsmen reaching a half-century, the yellow army managed to put on 188/9 on the board in 20 overs. Faf du Plessis top-scored with 33 with 4 fours and 2 sixes to his name.

Ambati Rayudu (27), Suresh Raina (26), and Dwayne Bravo (20* in 8 balls) were the other main contributors to the MS Dhoni-led CSK team’s formidable total on the board. Chetan Sakariya impressed once again with figures of 3/36, while Chris Morris took 2/33 for Rajasthan Royals.

Despite a seemingly bright start to their chase, RR didn’t seem to get any momentum into their innings, as with no dew coming on, MS Dhoni employed his spinners in Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali to great use and Royals kept losing wickets easily.

Jos Buttler made 49 with 5 fours and 3 sixes, while Jaydev Unadkat was the next best scorer with 24 runs and Rahul Tewatia made 20 runs. Ravindra Jadeja picked 2/28, while Moeen Ali took 3/7. Sam Curran also took two wickets and then Bravo chipped in with one.

Sanju Samson, the RR captain was interviewed by the commentators after his team ended 20 overs on 143/9 and lost the match by 45 runs.

“I thought it was a good score to chase down but we lost too many wickets in the middle overs. Our bowlers bowled really well, they batted too deep. 10-15 runs extra we gave down the line. We never expected that (turn), the dew didn’t come and the ball was still turning, so it was a bit shocking to see,” Sanju Samson said.

“It’s very important to maintain a good composure, this format demands us to score at a higher risk rate; hence, it’s very normal to get out often. I keep working on the basics and giving myself some time at the centre. He’s (Chetan Sakariya) been doing really well, we lost the match but there are a lot of positives,” he further added.

With this win, CSK moved to the second spot in the points table with 2 wins from 3 matches, while RR is at 6th spot with 2 losses and 1 win from 3 matches.
