Rajasthan Royals (RR) gunned down the target of 190 versus Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with 7 wickets in hand and 15 balls to spare with the help of thunderous knocks by Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube.

Chasing 190, Rajasthan Royals got off to a blazing start by openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Evin Lewis. Jaiswal stroked Josh Hazlewood for three fours in the second over before Lewis attacked Sam Curran and Shardul Thakur taking a four and a six off each bowler.

Then, Jaiswal rained down on Hazlewood – the young opener smacked the lanky Australian for three sixes and a boundary in the fifth over to bring up his fifty from 19 balls.

Thakur got CSK’s first breakthrough in the form of Evin Lewis who departed after scoring 27 runs off 12 balls. RR, though, had an incredible powerplay finishing at a high on 81/1. On the first ball after the powerplay, pacer KM Asif, playing in his first game of the season, managed to dismiss the high-flying Jaiswal.

Shivam Dube didn’t let CSK build upon those wickets as he launched Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali for three sixes, before taking his assault to Sam Curran and Hazlewood to bring the required rate under 6 runs per over, bringing up his fifty off 31 balls. On the other end, Sanju Samson played the second fiddle on the other end, rotating the strike nicely while also hitting occasional boundaries.

The Samson-Dube 89-run stand from 58 balls was broken by Thakur, dismissing the RR skipper for 28. Glenn Phillips and Dube took RR over the line further unscathed.

Earlier, after being inserted into bat first, Ruturaj Gaikwad started his innings with a beautiful straight drive off Akash Singh. CSK were 25/0 after four over, before Faf du Plessis struck two fours off Chetan Sakariya in the fifth, and Gaikwad thumped CSK’s first six to Mustafizur Rahman to cap off the powerplay at 44/0.

Faf du Plessis then got out to Rahul Tewatia in the seventh over, stumped by Samson while trying to accelerate. Tewatia struck again with Suresh Raina’s wicket. The run rate for CSK dipped as they reached 63/2 at the 10-over mark.

Gaikwad and Moeen Ali then took the attack to leg-spinners Tewatia and Mayank Markande lofting them for fours and sixes. The right-hander raised his fifty in the 14th over, but the left-hander got stumped, in the 15th, giving Tewatia his third wicket of the night.

The CSK opener continued to hammer runs off some indisciplined bowling by RR bowlers. At the other end, Sakariya accounted for Ambati Rayudu’s wicket.

Gaikwad hit 4,4,6 in the 16th over to Akash Singh to reach 80; he harrumphed Mustafizur for a gigantic six over mid-wicket in the 18th to enter the 90s. Ravindra Jadeja went beserk in the last over against Mustafizur: 4,6,wd,4 giving a single to Gaikwad on the fourth ball.

Gaikwad, on 95, missed the fifth ball but walloped a maximum on the last ball to bring up his maiden IPL century as CSK finished with a mammoth total of 189.

Twitter lauded the knocks by Jaiswal and Dube as Rajasthan Royals remain alive in the playoff race.
