Kolkata Knight Riders bagged a huge victory over Rajasthan Royals in their final group stage game in IPL 2021. KKR needed to defeat Rajasthan Royals by a good margin to seal their playoffs berth, and they exactly did so. The Eoin Morgan-led team beat RR by 86 runs. As a result, their net run rate has jumped to such a mark that Mumbai Indians have almost no opportunity to make it for playoffs.

Batting first, KKR posted 171-4 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Opener Shubman Gill smacked 56 runs off 44 balls while Venkatesh Iyer hit 38. Both the openers also scored an opening stand of 79 runs. Later, Rahul Tripathi scored 21 as KKR reached a good total on the board. For RR, Chris Morris, Chetan Sakariya, Rahul Tewatia, and Glenn Phillips picked one wicket each.

Later, Rajasthan Royals completely succumbed to the KKR’s bowling attack. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal got out for a duck while Liam Livingstone could score only 6 runs. The lower-order batsman Rahul Tewatia scored 44 runs in the end, but all the damage had been done till then. Apart from Tewatia, Shivam Dube was the only player to score in double-digits with his 18 runs. The rest of the batsmen got out for single-digit scores.

RR were eventually bowled out for 85 runs in 16.1 overs. For KKR, Shivam Mavi grabbed a 4-wicket haul while Lockie Ferguson picked 3 wickets. Varun Chakravarthy also managed to pick one scalp. With a victory by 86 runs in the match, KKR’s net run rate has reached +0.587.

Talking about the playoffs in IPL 2021, Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, and Royal Challengers Bangalore have already qualified for it. KKR has 14 points, and they are almost certain to end at the 4th spot. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians have 12 points in their kitty, and they need to defend Sunrisers Hyderabad by a margin of 171 runs or more to bag a berth into playoffs.

This looks highly impossible as the biggest victory by the margin of runs in IPL history is 146 runs. Below, we look at the updated points table, orange cap, and purple cap table after the KKR vs RR match.
