Delhi Capitals (DC) pacer Avesh Khan continued his rise in IPL 2021 as he returned with a three-wicket haul against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Saturday in Sharjah. He had a couple of big scalps to his name in Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya.
While Sharma mistimed a short-ball, Avesh Khan rattled Hardik Pandya’s stumps, almost uprooting the leg stick. On the first ball of the 19th over, the speedster sent down a 141 kph thunderbolt; the ball tailed a bit at the end and nutmegged between Pandya’s legs.
Pandya tried to flick it on the leg side but was beaten by the sheer pace of delivery which crashed into his leg-stump. Avesh Khan now has snapped 21 wickets this season – 5 behind Harshal Patel – at an average of 15 while bowling at an economy of 7.00 – much better than Harshal’s 8.57.
MI finish on 129
After being asked to bat first by Rishabh Pant, MI skipper Rohit Sharma started his innings with a four on the first ball off Anrich Nortje, but got out to Avesh Khan in the second over.
Suryakumar Yadav, who has been out of form in the UAE leg, swept R Ashwin for a maximum to announce his arrival. Quinton de Kock ramped compatriot Kagiso Rabada for a six over short fine leg.
However, runs seemed to dry up for MI as they finished the powerplay at 35/1. Soon after, de Kock was dismissed by Axar Patel for 19 runs off 18 balls. Suryakumar played his shots against Ashwin and Rabada before falling to Patel, who would also dismiss Saurabh Tiwary to cap off his spell with figures of 3/21.
Wickets continue to fall as Kieron Pollard edged Nortje onto his stumps. With the ball holding in the pitch, Pandya brothers, Hardik and Krunal, struggled to even rotate the strike, dragging MI to 100 in the 17th over.
Hardik broke his shackles with a couple of boundaries off Nortje in the 18th before getting yorked by Avesh Khan in the 19th. Nathan Coulter-Nile was also bowled by Khan, who ended up with figures of 3/15. A six each from Jayant Yadav and Krunal Pandya in the last over of the innings, bowled by Ashwin, helped MI to a respectable total of 129.
