It was an emotional moment for Dhanashree Verma, wife of leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal after the bowler snapped his first wicket of IPL 2021 in his third game. Yuzvendra Chahal picked up two wickets – Nitish Rana and Dinesh Karthik – in Royal Challengers Bangalore’s win on Sunday over Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai.
The Haryana-born spinner has had a tough past month on the field. He was dropped from the Indian team during the 5-match T20I series versus England after managing to pick just three wickets in three matches and leaking runs at 9.92 per over and was replaced by Rahul Chahar.
He didn’t have an ideal start to his IPL campaign either returning with figures of 0/41 and 0/29. On the Chennai pitch where batters found it difficult to score runs, and bowlers taking wickets in heaps – Rahul Chahar continues to impress having taken 7 wickets already – Yuzvendra Chahal’s two wicketless games were a concerning sign for RCB and India skipper, Virat Kohli.
However, the wily leg-spinner seems to be returning to form with his 2-wicket haul for 34 runs – 20 of which were taken by Andre Russell in one over – on Sunday against KKR while defending a big total.
Kohli brought in his ace spinner in the third over of the defence, and he conceded just two runs despite the batters looking to attack him with the powerplay restrictions in place. He came back straight post the powerplay and was smashed for a couple of boundaries by Nitish Rana.
However, Yuzvendra Chahal had the last laugh as the KKR opener fell for one shot too many and was caught in the deep by Devdutt Padikkal. As the wicket fell, Dhanashree, who was in the stands cheering her husband, got teary-eyed and looking up to the heavens thanked the god as the leg-spinner picked his maiden scalp this season. In his third over he went on to dismiss veteran batsman, Dinesh Karthik also.

With a massive 38-run victory over Eoin Morgan’s team, Virat Kohli’s side leads the points table and is the only team to remain unbeaten in the season so far. They have completed their Chennai leg and will move to Mumbai to face Rajasthan Royals on Thursday.
