Former India wicketkeeper-batsman, Parthiv Patel opines that Suresh Raina will have a crucial role to play for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2021 if the 3-time champions are to put a better performance than they did last year without the services of their premier batsman.
Suresh Raina pulled out of the IPL 2020 due to personal reasons – he even went to the UAE to participate in the tournament but flew back home after some cases of the COVID-19 virus were found in the CSK contingent. The Men In Yellow endured their worst ever IPL season – CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time last season.
However, Parthiv Patel is confident that the MS Dhoni-led outfit will put on a much-improved show this year as not only Raina is back to bolster the middle-order, but also young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad is in good form in domestic cricket – Gaikwad hit 3 consecutive fifties to better CSK’s season – along with the skipper himself. Raina is currently the second leading run-scorer in the IPL, only behind Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper, Virat Kohli.
“And now with Suresh Raina coming in the squad. I think he holds key in the CSK line-up and we have seen what he has done throughout the years of IPL. With him coming back and Ruturaj Gaikwad doing well in domestic cricket and plus MS Dhoni, they’re great players and you can’t count them out for too long,” Parthiv Patel said while speaking with Star Sports.
“Last year, what went wrong for CSK was, that they were not getting enough runs on the board. Then, in the latter half of the tournament, you saw emergence of Ruturaj Gaikwad,” he added.
They must be slightly disappointed that they have to get out of Chennai: Parthiv Patel
Parthiv Patel, who is appointed as Mumbai Indians’ Talen Scout, says that CSK will be unhappy with not playing their games in Chennai – no team will play any match at its home ground this season – as they bought the likes of Moeen Ali and Krishnappa Gowtham in accordance for the spin-friendly pitch at the Chepauk. CSK’s league stage games are scheduled in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Kolkata.
“See, obviously they must be slightly disappointed that they have to get out of Chennai because they have got Moeen Ali in their squad, they have got K Gowtham in their squad,”the 36-year-old former keeper further stated.
