Steve Smith has commented on reports and rumors that he will replace Kane Williamson and play for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 2023 season of IPL.

Williamson was injured while trying to save a six from going over the boundary. He had an awkward landing on his right leg and injured his knee. It looked bad when the New Zealand captain immediately fell on the floor and started clutching his knee. The grim diagnosis came in after the match confirming that Kane has been ruled out of the tournament completely.

Smith, who last played in IPL for Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2021, is part of the Star Sports commentary team for the 2023 season. This happened after he went unsold in l2022 and did not participate in last December’s mini-auction.

While the Australian might fill the “anchor” role in GT’s attack that Williamson would have filled, when asked about his possible inclusion in IPL 2023, he believed that it is not possible this year.

“I don’t know if I’ll qualify, I didn’t even put myself in the auctions. So I don’t think there’s even a possibility. So, maybe next year, we will see where we go,” Smith said.

Steve Smith most recently captained Australia to a 2-1 win over India in a recent ODI series.

Sanjay Manjrekar likes the idea of Steve Smith replacing an injured Kane Williamson in GT squad

Cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar believes that bringing Steve Smith into the Gujarat Titans (GT) fold in place of an injured Kane Williamson. He even suggested that the Australian might even lead the squad.

“I think that would be a brilliant call, and Steve Smith is the kind of player they want, somebody who can play all kinds of gears. Plus with the new rules which he finds very cool, I’d love to see Smith’s captaincy, we saw that and we were raving about it in the India-Australia series,” he said

While it is not sure who will GT replace an injured Kane Williamson with, Steve Smith looks like the best choice at the moment.

After a victorious start to their campaign, GT will now face DC in the latter’s home ground, Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, on April 4.
