The auction venue for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is being contemplated as Istanbul for an overseas option by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). A final decision is expected to be taken in the first week of November with the regular venue Bengaluru also in consideration.

However, the Istanbul option is very much on the IPL table and is the first choice, Cricbuzz has reported.

BCCI previously has come close to holding auctions overseas

The IPL authorities always thought of taking the auction overseas- on one occasion a workshop was held in Singapore. In another year, the BCCI came close to holding it in London but had to cancel it at the last minute in the face of resistance from a few franchises who argued of it as an expensive proposition.

Istanbul is still not a unanimous choice of all the stakeholders but when it comes to important IPL decisions, the BCCI always decides and its officials have informed the teams that the final decision will be taken early next month keeping Bengaluru as a potential second choice. The auction is tentatively scheduled for December 16.

IPL 2023 auction purse to be increased to 95cr from last year’s 90 cr

This year it is expected to be a mini auction and most likely it will be a one-day affair. The BCCI/IPL may also hold a workshop and the whole trip to Turkey could last just three or four days.

The IPL 2023 is tentatively slated to start in the third week of March and will run till May-end or early June.
