Kagiso Rabada, on Thursday (April 13), broke legendary Lasith Malinga’s record to become the fastest bowler to take 100 wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The South African pace spearhead achieved the incredible milestone during the game between Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Defending 153, Punjab Kings desperately needed a wicket after Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill gave Gujarat Titans a flying start.

At the end of the fourth over, the reigning IPL champions had run away to 44 for no loss. In the fifth over, Kagiso Rabada gave his team the much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Wriddhiman Saha for 30. Saha’s knock came off 19 balls and was studded with 5 fours.

Kagiso Rabada creates history:

Saha’s wicket saw Kagiso Rabada create history in IPL. The right-arm pacer is now the fastest to 100 wickets in the tournament. The record was previously held by former Mumbai Indians’ Sri Lankan superstar Lasith Malinga.

Kagiso Rabada achieved the milestone in his 64th IPL match while Malinga had done it in his 70th match. Malinga’s record stood for almost a decade. He had completed 100 wickets in IPL in May 2013. India fast bowler Harshal Patel is third on the list, having reached 100 wickets in 79 innings.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is next on the list and he is followed by Rashid Khan, Amit Mishra, and Ashish Nehra. Rashid picked up his 100th IPL wicket last year in his 83rd match while Amit Mishra also took 83 matches to achieve the milestone in 2014. Nehra too did it in his 83rd match in 2017. They are followed by Yuzvendra Chahal who took 84 games to complete 100 wickets in IPL.
