ToggleMumbai Indians (MI) won the toss & opted to bowl against the mighty Punjab Kings (PBKS). PBKS made one change to their playing 11 as they brought back Matthew Short in place of Kagiso Rabada. Matthew Short hasn’t been able to dictate the terms in IPL 2023 as he has scored 117 runs in 6 innings.
PBKS got off to a terrific start as they scored 50 runs in the power-play overs for the loss of 1 wicket as Prabhsimran Singh failed to trouble the scorers. Matthew Short was quite aggressive in his approach and capitalized on loose deliveries.
The veteran spinner Piyush Chawla got the priced wicket of Shikhar Dhawan in the 8th over when he foxed him by bowling a short of a length delivery as the spinner saw him advancing down the track. Shikhar Dhawan was looking ominous as he was dismissed on 30 runs in 20 balls as he struck 5 fours.
Piyush Chawla thrashes Matthew Short’s stumps
At the end of 11 overs, PBKS’ score was 94-2. Piyush Chawla was bowling the 12th over, on the second delivery of the over Matthew Short tried to play a lofted shot towards the cover region but Piyush bowled a googly and rattled his stumps.
IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)
Matthew Short was slowly getting into the groove as he was dismissed on 27 runs in 26 balls and struck 2 fours and 1 six. It won’t be wrong to say that picking Piyush Chawla’s googly has been tough for PBKS’ batters. PBKS’ score at 11.2 overs was 95-3.
Crucial Phase for both teams
PBKS have got a lot of firepower present but they need Liam Livingstone to bat as deep as possible. It would be interesting to see whether PBKS apply an ultra-attacking approach. It won’t be a surprise if Shahrukh Khan gets promoted up the order.
MI fans would be banking on Jofra Archer to take wickets in his 3 remaining overs. It would be interesting to see how the right-arm pacer Cameron Green fares who can fox the batters with his variations. There are chances that dew may come into action later in the match.
