Rajasthan Royals (RR) spinner Ravichandran Ashwin revealed an interesting conversation with Sandeep Sharma during the last over of the game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He said that he asked the pacer to bowl the highest-risk ball to MS Dhoni.

The game between CSK and RR at the Chepauk Stadium earlier this season went down the wire and it gave nostalgia to many fans as MS Dhoni almost pulled off the chase but veteran Sandeep Sharma played a staggering part and bowled exceptionally well.

RR needed 21 runs to defend in the last over, RR skipper Sanju Samson had the option to give the ball to Kuldeep Sen, who had bowled sensationally and had conceded just 8 runs. But he turned to veteran Sandeep Sharma and he repaid his trust by winning the game for the team.

Sandeep Sharma although went for two sixes but just when it was needed he nailed his yorkers and won the game for his side. He executed three yorkers brilliantly to which CSK skipper MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja failed to dispatch the ball.

In a video that went viral on social media, R Ashwin elaborated hie odds were against Sandeep Sharma while bowling to MS Dhoni.

He explained: “Let me give you an example. Sandeep Sharma bowled that last over to Dhoni and he smashed him for two sixes, when you are defending 20 runs and when a guy like Dhoni has smashed you for 2 sixes, the odds of you coming out on top of that battle from there are literally none.”

RR vs GT: R Ashwin Reveals His Conversation With Sandeep Sharma

R Ashwin further revealed the conversation with Sandeep Sharma. He urged the pacer to bowl high-risk delivery at that time because the batter won’t expect the bowler to bat that delivery at that time.

He added further: “What’s the highest risk ball at this point’, I asked.” Sandeep replied, “Slower length ball. “I said, ‘You try bowling that to him now’. At the end of the day, at that point in time, whatever is the most riskiest ball the batsman won’t be expecting that.

Because the batsman knows that the bowler is under immense pressure. So the batter won’t expect that ball from the bowler. Playing with the probability and numbers, I feel knowing them is good. But you don’t have to adhere to that always.”

Notably, Rajasthan Royals thumped CSK in the reverse fixture as well. They are currently placed 4th on the points table with 5 wins in 9 games. They will be next seen in action when they will take on Gujarat Titans (GT) in their next game on Friday (5th May).
