The 24-year-old England National Cricket Team fast-bowling all-rounder Sam Curran was bought by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for a whopping INR 18.50 crore at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auction.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 player auction, which is a mini-auction, is currently underway in Kochi. In addition to the money left over from the Indian Premier League 2022 mega auction and the value of the players released, each team are having an additional INR 5 crore to spend at the Indian Premier League 2023 mini-auction.

Meanwhile, the star England all-rounder entered the auction with a base price of INR 2 crore. Many predicted that he would break all the previous records and become the most expensive player of all time in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The predictions of the fans and experts turned out to be correct as Sam Curran did break all the records and became the most expensive player to be ever bought by a franchise at the IPL auction. He has also become the highest-paid cricketer in the history of the IPL, surpassing Virat Kohli and KL Rahul ( INR 17 crore). Also, the most expensive player bought at the IPL auction before Curran was Chris Morris for 16.25 by Rajasthan Royals.

Notably, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings were engaged in an intense bidding war to acquire the services of Sam Curran and bidding went past INR 15 crore in no time. In the end, Punjab Kings, which entered the auction with the second-highest purse of INR 32.2 crore, were able to bring in Sam Curran for INR 18.50 crore.

Sam Curran is a proven match-winner and he is a highly impactful player both with bat and ball. In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, he won the Player of the Tournament as well as the Player of the Match in the final.

Sam Curran had earlier represented Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was bought by PBKS for INR 7.2 crore in 2019 but was released after just one season, which allowed Chennai Super Kings to pick him ahead of the IPL 2020 for INR 5.50 crore.
