Former South Africa captain and Royal Challengers Bangalore legend AB de Villiers is all set to return for IPL 2024 after a successful commentating stint in the 2023 season. The former batter confirmed the news on his latest YouTube video on his respective channel where he also revealed that a coaching role in RCB could also be on the cards.

AB de Villiers also stated that he discussed with his former teammate Virat Kohli the possibility of him getting involved in RCB’s plans. De Villiers said that Kohli had a short chat about it and that the Indian batting stalwart has asked him to come over to and spend some considerable time with RCB batters.

AB de Villiers says nothing is confirmed yet

The 40-year-old who invented and donned the label of Mr. 360 degree for his incredible stroke play all around the field, stated that nothing is confirmed yet. That he goes on to join the RCB coaching staff in the future, should be a call from head coach Andy Flower and captain Faf Du Plessis.

But for now, AB de Villiers is going to be heading over to Mumbai for media duties ahead of the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League. Last year, the Pretorian was a part of the Jio Cinema entourage for exclusive English commentary and had recently voiced the 2nd edition of the SA20 league.

This year too, de Villiers is expected to be with Jio Cinema even if interest comes from the side of Star Sports who are Television broadcasters of IPL 2024.

“Nothing confirmed yet, Virat has hinted that he might want me to come over and spend a bit of time with him and some of the batters. That call will come from Andy Flower, Faf, and the team. For now, I’m just going to be in Mumbai for the first few weeks of the IPL. I’m doing a bit of commentating.” – de Villiers said via his latest YouTube video.

After announcing international retirement back in May 2018, ABD played the IPL until 2021 as he also gave up on his time as a freelance domestic T20 cricketer. His relationship in specific was too special with the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s fan base and he indeed retired as a legend of the club.

But even with him on the team, RCB could not win an IPL trophy, despite reaching the finals in 2009, 2011, and 2016. AB de Villiers was a part of the team that lost to Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2011 and 2016 finals. In those 2 seasons, the former right-hand batter had scored 312 and 687 at a 160+ strike rate. He retired after scoring 5162 IPL runs, majorly for RCB and some of it for Delhi Daredevils.
