Surnisers Hyderabad (SRH) have faced a big blow as their prime spinner Wanindu Hasaranga will need at least one more week to return to IPL 2024. According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, Wanindu Hasaranaga is struggling with chronic pain in his left heel and will need at least one week time to recover from the injury.
Sunrisers Hyderabad picked Wanindu Hasaranga during the IPL 2024 mini-auction in December last year. The Sri Lanka spinner was part of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) last season but the franchise released him ahead of IPL 2024. Later, Sunrisers Hyderabad grabbed the leg spinner for Rs. 1.50 crore.
Wanindu Hasaranga ruled out from IPL 2024 for another week- Reports
According to reports by ESPN Cricinfo, Wanindu Hasaranga will not be able to arrive on the field in IPL 2024 anytime soon. He is under medical observation with Sri Lanka Cricket Board for pain in his left heel. According to reports, the pain is due to musculo-skeletal apparatus in his left heel becoming worn.
Notably, the report also said there is no confirmed date for Hasaranga’s return to IPL 2024. Therefore, his return can be delayed further. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) wishes to make him ready for ICC T20I World Cup in June. Hasaranga is the T20I skipper of Sri Lanka and will lead the side in the ICC tournament.
Hasaranga played in series vs Bangladesh despite pain
Surprisingly, Wanindu Hasaranga took part in the recent ODI series and T20I series against Bangladesh despite the pain. He led the team to a 2-1 victory in the T20I series. He was also part of the ODI series, which Sri Lanka eventually lost 2-1.
Recently, Hasaranga withdrew his Test retirement and was expected to play in the two Tests vs Bangladesh. However, ICC banned him for two Tests for breaching the code of conduct during the Bangladesh tour. As a result, he was snubbed from the Test series against Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad are set to face Mumbai Indians in their next game on Wednesday, March 27. Earlier, SRH lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in their opening match by 4 runs in a nail-biting clash.
SRH lost to KKR in opening game
Batting first, the home side KKR piled up a gigantic 208-7 in 1st innings with an impeccable 25-ball-64 by Andre Russell. The West Indies giant slammed 7 sixes to give a marvellous finish to the KKR’s batting.
During the chase, SRH wicketkeeper and lower-order batter Heinrich Klaasen smacked 63 runs off 29 balls to put a memorable effort for victory. However, SRH failed to capture 13 runs off the final over of Harshit Rana. In the end, SRH remained short of 4 runs.
In the absence of Wanindu Hasaranga, SRH featured spinner Mayank Markande in the playing 11 against KKR. The leg spinner hunted 2 wickets in the match. Since Hasaranga will take more time to return to IPL 2024, Markande is expected to take the field against Mumbai Indians too.
