Delhi Capitals have received a huge injury boost ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Their star fast-bowler Anrich Nortje has finally returned to action after a lengthy injury lay-off.

The South African star suffered a number of injuries last year. Just before IPL 2023, he suffered a groin injury although he managed to recover in time. In the end, he played ten games in the tournament before returning home due to personal reasons.

He did play in the Major League Cricket in the USA before being sidelined with a back stress fracture in the back. The right-arm pacer suffered the injury during the ODI series against Australia in September and has been sidelined since then. The injury ruled him out of the ODI World Cup as well as the home series against India and the SA20.

Several reports also suggested that Delhi Capitals might release Anrich Nortje because of his injury struggles. However, the franchise decided against releasing the pacer and will be delighted with his return to action just before IPL 2024. The 30-year-old played for the Warriors against KwaZulu-Natal Inland in the ongoing CSA T20 Challenge. Although he did not get any wickets in the game, he conceded only 12 runs in his four overs.

Will Anrich Nortje play the first game?

While Anrich Nortje has returned to action, there are still doubts over his participation in Delhi Capitals’ first game of IPL 2024, scheduled to take place on March 23 against Punjab Kings. According to a report in Cricbuzz, his participation will depend ‘on reasons that go beyond cricket’.

In his comeback game, his readiness wasn’t tested as he did not bowl consecutive overs. The pacer bowled the second, sixth, ninth, and 15th over of the game. It could be an indication that he is trying to build his workload and could need some more time before being ready to fire on all cylinders.

“He came through well,” Warriors coach Robin Peterson told Cricbuzz. “His pace was up; he’s as quick as I’ve seen him. He looks happy with his body. Now his target is playing back-to-back competitive games.”

“There’s always that element of getting confident in the machine again. But Anrich is incredibly professional. He’s had injuries before, so he’s got some sort of formula on how to recover and what to do. The more I watch him bowl, the more he seems fine. He looks fit and healthy. He looks happy,” he added.
