Veteran Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell shared his thoughts on the potential selection of Virat Kohli in India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. Glenn Maxwell hailed Virat Kohli as the most clutch player he has ever faced, acknowledging his exceptional match-winning abilities.
Virat Kohli is currently representing the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He scored a century against the Rajasthan Royals in a recent game. However, his knock was not enough for critics who have doubted his selection for the T20 World Cup.
In IPL 2024, the 35-year-old has amassed 316 runs from five matches at an average of 105.33 and a strike rate of 146.30, securing the top spot in the Orange Cap list. However, his joint slowest IPL century ever has fueled doubts among critics regarding his selection for the World Cup.
Virat Kohli Is The Most Clutch Player - Glenn Maxwell
Speaking to ESPN, Glenn Maxwell expressed a lighthearted sentiment, stating his hope that India doesn't select Virat Kohli. Maxwell also reminisced about Kohli's exceptional innings against Australia in the 2016 T20 World Cup, describing him as the most clutch player he has faced.
"I hope India don't pick him. Virat Kohli is the most clutch player I have ever played against. The innings he played against us in Mohali during the 2016 T20 World Cup is still the best innings I have ever seen been played against me. His awareness of what he needs to do to win the game is just phenomenal. I hope India don't pick him because it will be great to not come up against him," Maxwell said.
In a crucial 2016 T20 World Cup match against Australia, Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 82 off 51 balls, including nine fours and two sixes. India secured the win with five balls to spare despite needing 39 runs from the last three overs.
There Should Be Heat On Every Player - Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell recognized the pressure faced by Indian players and the high competition for spots in the team, given the abundance of talented cricketers in the country. He emphasized the formidable lineup of top Indian T20 players in the IPL.
"It's not surprising because there are 1.5 billion and I reckon half of them are unbelievable cricketers in this country (laughs). It's a hard team to get into. You look at India's top T20 players which are all playing in this tournament. They are phenomenal players and there should be heat on every player," Maxwell opined.
Virat Kohli, despite securing victories in the ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy, has yet to claim the T20 World Cup, marking the only ICC white-ball trophy eluding him. Notably, he earned the Player of the Tournament title in the 2014 and 2016 editions of the T20 World Cup consecutively.
Kohli has played 117 T20Is for India, scoring 4037 runs at a strike rate of 138.16, with one century and 37 half-centuries. Remarkably, he holds the record for the highest run tally in T20 World Cup history, scoring 1,141 runs with an average exceeding 81 across 27 matches.
