Hardik Pandya has revealed his role for Mumbai Indians in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The India allrounder will have his task cut out as an allrounder as well as a captain in IPL 2024.

He has replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain of the team and will be under immense pressure to deliver. Rohit is one of the most decorated captains in the history of the IPL. From 2013 to 2020, he led Mumbai Indians to a record five IPL titles. The onus will now be on Hardik Pandya to end Mumbai’s recent title drought. Having not won the title since 2020, Mumbai Indians will be desperate to go all the way this season.

Hardik Pandya will have to play a key role not only as a captain but as an allrounder as well. And ahead of the start of the season, he has opened up on his role in the team. Interacting with the media on Monday (March 18), the Mumbai Indians skipper said that he will be playing the role of a finisher for his team in IPL 2024, saying:

“This IPL, I will play as an all-rounder and finish as many games as possible and enjoy the position I have always loved.”

Hardik Pandya also opened up on his return to Mumbai Indians. The allrounder began his IPL journey with Mumbai Indians in 2015 and played for them till 2021 before parting ways. In 2022 and 2023, he plied his trade for Gujarat Titans. In his maiden season with Gujarat, he led them to the IPL title. In 2023, Gujarat qualified for the final once again before losing to Chennai Super Kings.

“It’s exciting. The welcome was wonderful, warm and emotional. Two years back, I did not think I would be back here but I am,” said Hardik Pandya.

“It’s been two years and a lot has changed. The coaches have changed and only four or five players from the past are still here. But the name is still the same and the emotions are the same,” he added.

For Gujarat Titans, Hardik Pandya scored 487 and 346 runs in 2022 and 2023 respectively. He also picked up eight wickets in the two seasons.
