Mohammed Shami's replacement in Gujarat Titans for IPL 2024 comes out in public

The Gujarat Titans have officially announced the replacement of India pacer Mohammed Shami for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. The Gujarat Titans have named Sandeep Warrier a as a replacement for Mohammed Shami for the upcoming season.
Following ankle surgery in London, Mohammed Shami was ruled out of the upcoming IPL 2024 season. Shami’s last appearance for India was in the 2023 ODI World Cup at home, where he emerged as the team’s leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets in seven matches.
The 33-year-old is expected to miss the T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be played in the Caribbean Islands and the USA. The right-arm pacer is likely to return to action late in 2024. He will be a crucial bowler for India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia.
Mohammed Shami was GT’s top wicket-taker, with 48 dismissals in 33 appearances. The veteran pacer played a pivotal role for the team during IPL 2023. Shami notably claimed 28 wickets in 17 matches during the season, earning him the prestigious Purple Cap award.
Sandeep Warrier Named As Replacement For Mohammed Shami
The IPL website confirmed that Sandeep Warrier was acquired by the Gujarat Titans for a base price of INR 50 lakh, replacing the injured Mohammed Shami.
“Gujarat Titans (GT) named Sandeep Warrier as a replacement for Mohd. Shami while Mumbai Indians (MI) added Kwena Maphaka to the squad as a replacement for Dilshan Madushanka for the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024,” the statement on iplt20.com read.
“Shami – the veteran Indian pacer – recently successfully underwent surgery for his right heel problem and is currently recovering. His replacement, Sandeep Warrier has so far played 5 IPL matches and will join GT for his base price of INR 50 Lac,” the statement added.
Sandeep Warrier has featured in only one T20I in 2021 against Sri Lanka. The right-arm pacer has appeared in five matches with the Kolkata Knight Riders between 2019 and 2021 in the IPL. He managed to secure two wickets at a decent economy rate of 7.88.
The 32-year-old has not played a game, despite stints with Royal Challengers Bangalore (2013-15) and Mumbai Indians (2023). Warrier will now be part of a fast-bowling contingent featuring Mohit Sharma, Josh Little, Umesh Yadav, Spencer Johnson, and Kartik Tyagi.
Matthew Wade Ruled Out Of First Two Matches Of IPL 2024
The Titans will be without Matthew Wade for their first two games as he joins Tasmania for the Sheffield Shield final, while the participation of Jharkhand batter Robin Minz remains uncertain.
Shubman Gill will lead the 2022 IPL champions this season following Hardik Pandya’s move to the Mumbai Indians. The team will kick off their season with a match against the Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 24.
