Mumbai Indians‘ veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has dropped a major update on the fitness of their star batsman and the number one T20I batsman Suryakumar Yadav.
The right-hand batter is currently recovering from a sports hernia that he picked up last year in December when India was on an all-format tour of South Africa. Suryakumar had captained the Indian team during the 3-match T20I series but he had unfortunately twisted his ankle during the game.
Since then, Suryakumar Yadav has missed all sorts of cricketing action for the Men in Blue, including the home T20I series against Afghanistan in January. India had also played a 5-match Test series against England and although he isn’t that important in the red-ball format, his absence in IPL 2024 has hurt the Mumbai Indians badly as SKY is a key batter in the middle-order.
The 5-time champions haven’t been able to register a win after 2 matches in the tournament against Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad. On both occasions, MI have gone close to the victory but it will be fair to say that they lacked the luck factor in their opening games.
And that’s why, Suryakumar Yadav becomes imperative for Hardik Pandya‘s side, who will be playing their first home game of the season later tonight against Rajasthan Royals.

Piyush Chawla says NCA is still looking after Suryakumar Yadav
Meanwhile, MI wrist spinner Piyush Chawla while speaking to press reporters recently, claimed that officials over at the NCA are still looking after the hernia that Suryakumar Yadav is going through. Chawla did not have much to say as he told the reporters to ask this question to MI team management as they will know about it better. “NCA still has to look after that, and coaches know more about it than us players.” – Chawla told reporters at the Wankhede stadium.

BCCI officials claim they don’t want to rush Surya’s return to keep him safe for the T20 WC 2024
While Chawla had very little to update about, certain BCCI officials had more to say on the recovery of Suryakumar Yadav. They told a reporter of PTI that the 33-year-old has made very good progress so far with his illness and that he will be back to don the blue MI jersey very soon. However, Surya will have to sit for a few more games before a return can be made possible.
The source also claimed that BCCI’s main priority is to keep Suryakumar Yadav fit for this year’s biggest ICC event – the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies from June. That’s why his return to IPL 2024 is not being rushed since he is a key asset for India’s T20 team and will be imperative in the World Cup.
“Surya is making very good progress, and very soon he will be back playing for MI. However, he might have to sit out for a few more games, having missed the first two. For BCCI, the main concern is if he is on course for World T20 which he is. Obviously, he will play for MI but after a sports hernia surgery, he can’t be rushed.” – a BCCI source told PTI.
