England Women’s team pacer Kate Cross, in a recent interview, revealed that it was Virat Kohli’s idea to honor the Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women’s team during the RCB unbox event. The Women’s team led by Smriti Mandhana had defeated Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals Women’s in the final of the Women’s Premier League season earlier this month. With that, the franchise’s wait for the coveted Premier League trophy ended after a long wait of 17 years.

After the win, Mandhana and co. were on cloud 9 with RCB fans asking the Men’s team to learn and take inspiration from the Women’s team which won the WPL in only their second attempt. The first edition was one to forget for the South Indian franchise as they had failed to qualify for the playoffs by finishing 4th in the points table. They deserve plenty of plaudits for that terrific turnaround and former Men’s team captain Virat Kohli wanted to give them a fitting appreciation.

As revealed by English pacer Kate Cross while speaking to BBC network, it was Virat Kohli who asked the team management to invite the Women’s team during the Unbox event. Kohli wanted to honor the splendid efforts of the players during the special event where RCB also released their new kit for the 2024 IPL season.

Virat Kohli texted RCB’s team owner to invite the Women’s team

Kate Cross revealed that Virat Kohli had personally texted RCB’s team owner to invite the Women’s team and celebrate their victory. “The Owner got the text from Virat Kohli saying, we should honor the girls on Sunday.” – Cross said via BBC Cricket.

This says so much about the kind of importance and respect Virat Kohli has in the RCB franchise. It’s not just the team management or the players, the franchise owners, too, value him and that’s why they invited the Women’s team over as well.

Even though Virat Kohli hasn’t won the IPL despite reaching the finals on 3 occasions, once as a captain, RCB feel their biggest win is having the batting stalwart in their ranks. The 35-year-old’s rise in World Cricket could not have been possible without the help and backing from the South-Indian franchise that appointed him as captain even before he captained the Indian team.

Kohli led RCB to their first IPL final since 2011 in 2016 when the batter’s performance surpassed every other’s. The Delhi-born batter had a 973-run season at a staggering average of 81.08, which also included 4 centuries and 7 half-centuries. RCB were untouchable that season but they once again choked in the final and saw the Sunrisers Hyderabad beat them for their maiden IPL title.

Nonetheless, no one can take away the things that Virat Kohli has done for the RCB, and with a new season, hopes have been renewed that he can at last guide the team to their maiden IPL trophy.

The exciting contest between RCB and KKR is set to unfold tonight

Meanwhile, after losing and winning their first 2 games against Chennai and Punjab, RCB is gearing up to welcome Kolkata Knight Riders later tonight at the M. Chinnaswamy. It is going to be a feisty competition between the teams which has a long history between them. KKR have an upper hand in the head-to-head numbers, winning 18 of the 32 matches while RCB have won the tie on 14 occasions. Point to be noted – Kolkata did the double against RCB last year.
