MS Dhoni has stepped down as CSK skipper just one day ahead of IPL 2024. Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named as the new captain of Chennai Super Kings. The right-handed batter will lead the side in IPL 2024 with MS Dhoni as part of the team.

Chennai Super Kings will commence their journey in IPL 2024 with the tournament opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The CSK vs RCB, IPL 2024 match 1, takes place on Friday, March 22 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

MS Dhoni must have told Ruturaj Gaikwad last year: Ravichandran Ashwin

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin expressed his opinions on CSK’s captaincy change on his YouTube channel. The off-spinner feels that MS Dhoni must have told Ruturaj Gaikwad about the captaincy switch last year.

“Ruturaj wouldn’t have thought his role was only a batter until yesterday. I know MS Dhoni very well. Sitting in his room, enjoying dinner with the youngsters, he must have told Ruturaj last year, I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case. ‘Brother, you are going to take charge. You can do all these things. I will be there, don’t worry is something that Dhoni night have told Ruturaj well in advance,” Ashwin said.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who is part of Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024, feels CSK’s captaincy change was an inevitable decision. He also reckons MS Dhoni always keeps the team at the forefront.

“This was an inevitable decision. It had to come at some stage. I know MS Dhoni. He keeps the team at the forefront. He keeps thinking about the well-being of the team. Because of that, 2 years ago, he gave the captain’s armband to Jadeja. Now, he has given it to Ruturaj. This decision had to happen. Who and how remained the question”, the 36-year-old Ashwin further added.

Ruturaj Gaikwad is an extremely cool and calm person: Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin, who represented Chennai Super Kings from IPL 2008 to IPL 2015, also said Ruturaj Gaikwad is an extremely cool and calm person and backed him as the new CSK skipper.

“I know Ruturaj, he is extremely cool and calm. He is a very good human being. I am extremely elated for him,” the veteran Indian spinner concluded.
