Dinesh Karthik made interesting remarks on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans amid the team's struggles in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Dinesh Karthik acknowledged both the positive and negative aspects of their passionate devotion regarding player performances.
Dinesh Karthik played for RCB in the IPL 2015 and returned to the team in 2022. Karthik has been a reliable finisher, amassing 701 runs at an average of 22.61 and a striking rate of 154.74. He has earned popularity among fans, with chants of 'DK' resonating in stadiums during RCB matches.
RCB Fans Are Loyalists - Dinesh Karthik
Speaking on Ravichandran Ashwin's YouTube channel, Dinesh Karthik emphasized the loyalty of RCB's fanbase, likening them to a family. Karthik highlighted that they defend their players vehemently in the face of criticism from others.1
"RCB fans are loyalists. They are actually family, and I say that in good and bad ways. The good way is that when you go, no matter what happens, if I walk in, they will cheer my name and make me feel like I'm the greatest player on Earth. What I mean by that is that to the outside world, they will never give up on you. If there is a fight between say you know some team and they say, “Oh, X is not a good player,” they will pounce on that person," Karthik said.
Dinesh Karthik is one of the rare players to have featured in every IPL season since its inception in 2008. The veteran wicketkeeper batter has missed only two matches throughout his illustrious career. He has represented six different teams in the tournament's history.
DK commenced his IPL journey with the Delhi Daredevils before joining Kings XI Punjab in 2011. He was part of the Mumbai Indians' first title win in 2013, then returned to Delhi in 2014. Following that, he played for the Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017 before joining the Kolkata Knight Riders for four seasons.
He Will Go Hard At Me - Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik revealed that RCB fans can be critical of player performances. He emphasized the stark contrast between their public loyalty and private scrutiny, underscoring the high expectations fans have for the IPL.
"On a personal level, that same fan will abuse me silently in DMs every day, rather than on a one-on-one note. He will go hard at me if I don't do well for RCB; he will smash me, not just me, my family, and whoever is possible in my life. But to the outside world, They will not give up an RCB player," Karthik continued.
Dinesh Karthik, possibly in his final IPL season, has excelled as a finisher, a notable improvement from his 2023 performance. Karthik played a crucial role in RCB's lone victory against the Punjab Kings. He scored 90 runs in two innings at an average of 45 and a strike rate of 173.
The Bengaluru-based franchise is struggling for consistency, leading to a second-to-bottom position in the table with just one win in five matches. The Faf du Plessis-led team will play against the Mumbai Indians in their next match at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, April 11.
