While Mumbai Indians have sacked Rohit Sharma as captain, Ambati Rayudu believes his former India and IPL teammate can easily lead any team in the world. Mumbai Indians raised several eyebrows by replacing Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as the captain ahead of the upcoming season of the IPL. Pandya, who began his IPL career with Mumbai Indians, plied his trade for Gujarat Titans in the last two editions of the IPL and did a stunning job as a captain.

In his first season with Titans, he led the team to the IPL title before guiding them to a runners-up finish in the last season of the competition. The India allrounder was then traded to Mumbai Indians before the five-time IPL champions decided to appoint him as the captain of the team. The franchise’s decision came after Rohit Sharma failed to impress as a captain as well as a batsman in recent seasons.

Ambati Rayudu on Rohit Sharma the captain:

After becoming the first team to win the IPL five times in 2020, Mumbai Indians failed to make the playoffs in 2021 and 2022. They did progress ahead of the league stage last year but could not qualify for the final. Rohit Sharma’s record with the bat was not impressive either in recent times. In the last two seasons of the IPL, the India star scored 600 runs at an average of 20.00 and a strike rate of 126.84.

While Mumbai Indians believed that Rohit Sharma was no longer the captain to lead them forward, Ambati Rayudu believes otherwise. In a recent interview, the former India batter stated that Rohit can still play IPL for the next 5-6 years and can lead any team in the world. Rayudu said that any team in the world would like to have availed of the India captain’s services.

“Rohit Sharma can play IPL for the next 5-6 years. If Rohit wants to captain, whole world is open for him. He can easily lead any team,” Ambati Rayudu told News24 Sports.

Rohit recently led India to a brilliant 4-1 series win over England in the Test series and is likely to be seen in action later this month when the IPL gets underway. IPL 2024 is scheduled to begin from March 22.
