Former India fast bowler S. Sreesanth, who was Rohit Sharma's teammate during the Indian team's ICC T20 World Cup triumph in 2007, feels that the latter will be leading the charge for Mumbai Indians with the bat.
Sreesanth's comments have come in the light of the growing outrage that fans are showcasing against MI for deciding to hand over the captaincy from Rohit to all-rounder Hardik Pandya.
The tension among supporters increased furthermore after Mumbai failed to win either of their opening 3 matches against Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals.
Sreesanth believes that even if Rohit Sharma doesn't have the burdern of captaincy anymore, he still has a lot to contribute for the welfare of the team. The former Punjab Kings pacer thinks that Rohit is more than capable of helping MI to stage a turnaround in the season through his performances with the bat.
And it goes without saying that the Hitman indeed has the capacity of influencing games towards his team's favor when he gets going.
Another reason why its important for Rohit Sharma to score runs is that he will be aiming to enter the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in USA and West Indies in full form. As it was confirmed by the BCCI honorable secretary, Rohit will heading over to USA and Windies, in what is going to be his 2nd ICC T20 WC edition as the captain of Men in Blues.
Last year, the Indian team had reached extremely close to end their trophy drought, which is in effect since 2013, but Rohit and Co. had to suffer defeats in the World Test Championship final as well as the 50-over WC final against Australia.
Sreesanth feels Rohit Sharma is a top contender for IPL 2024 Orange Cap
While speaking to Times of India recently in an exclusive chat, Sreesanth backed Rohit Sharma to be a top contender in the race for Orange Cap in IPL 2024 season.
Orange cap is given to that particular batsman who scores the most number of runs across the season and the list is currently spearheaded by none other than Rohit's India teammate Virat Kohli with 203 runs in 4 matches.
Currently, Rohit Sharma might not be even close to the top 5 list of highest run-scorers but Sreesanth thinks its just a matter of time.
One of the key reasons behind his thinking is that Rohit will be batting freely without the captaincy burden and that he has the onus of leading Mumbai Indians from the back.
"As far as I know Rohit, he would look to bat freely, without any captaincy burden, and may take the Orange Cap too. He is going to have a great season. He has led Mumbai Indians from the front but I am sure Rohit is going to lead Mumbai Indians from the back." - Sreesanth told Times of India.
MI to face DC up next
The Mumbai Indians, after losing their first three matches, have the chance of opening their winning account when they face Delhi Capitals in their next game at the Wankhede stadium on April 7th in an afternoon game.
