Shreyas Iyer is reportedly not injured and will be participating in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) right from the start. Recent reports stated that the right-handed batsman could be sidelined after aggravating a back injury during the recently concluded Ranji Trophy final.
He required on-field treatment on several occasions while batting in the second innings and did not take the field on days four and five of the game. The Mumbai star has struggled with his back several times in the recent past and reports stated that the latest setback could see him spend a considerable amount of time on the sidelines.
However, the injury is not serious and Shreyas Iyer is set to play in IPL 2024 right from the start, according to a report in RevSportz. The report stated that the batsman’s decision to not take the field on days four and five of the Ranji final was just a precautionary measure. He was seen shaking his legs after Mumbai clinched a record-extending 42nd Ranji title.
“Shreyas is scheduled to join the KKR camp on Friday. He is unlikely to miss games,” a source told the news outlet.
He is indeed facing problems in batting for long hours but that is unlikely to affect his participation in T20s. Shreyas Iyer missed the entire IPL last year after suffering a back injury during the Ahmedabad Test against Australia and had to undergo surgery.
Shreyas Iyer to be reconsidered for central contract:
The report further stated that Shreyas Iyer’s central contract could be reinstated in the coming days. Last month, the BCCI excluded him and Ishan Kishan from the central contracts for not playing in the Ranji Trophy. However, many within the BCCI believe that the batsman’s contract should be reinstated after he played back-to-back Ranji games.
As per reports, Iyer did not ignore BCCI’s directive to play in the Ranji Trophy but decided against playing because of his back issue. He was developing back spasms after facing 60 balls and went to the KKR academy in Mumbai to build his workload. He played a Ranji game even before the start of the England series.
