Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis are all set to take on Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2024 campaign opener in Chennai on Friday, March 22. They have an uphill task of beating Chennai Super Kings at the Chepauk in the first game of the season.

Historically, RCB have beaten CSK just once before at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. the Chepauk has been well and truly the fortress for CSK and not many teams have breached it consistently. Overall in 31 matches Chennai have won 20 games and RCB 10.

MS Dhoni over the years, as CSK captain have made the best use of the conditions at the venue and won games against all opposition. However, a day before the season opener MS Dhoni stepped down as captain passing the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad who will lead the franchise from its very first season.

Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis both have a lot of experience of playing at the Chepauk. Faf especially has much more experience as he has played under MS Dhoni’s captaincy at Chennai Super Kings for 10 years.

However, now he is in the opposite camp and part of the franchise who have never won the IPL. Ahead of the big game, both Kohli and Faf shared their take on this rivalry.

Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis on CSK vs RCB Rivalry

“Playing against Chennai is obviously a special occasion, a big game, you know the southern derby as they call it,” said Kohli in a video shared on RCB’s Twitter handle.

RCB skipper Faf du Plessis said that this rivalry is a great start, especially with the likes of Koli and Dhoni going at each other in a big game.

“I think it’s a great start to the IPL. Two iconic teams, two of India’s greatest to play the game, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, so it’s a proper box office start to the campaign.”

Virat Kohli then shared his emotions when he spoke about playing in front of the Chepauk crowd. He said, ” Yeah it will be nice to play in front of very passionate Chennai fans, and good to catch up with MS it’s been a while”.

Faf also spoke about going back to Chennai and playing in front of the Chepauk fans when he said ” I am looking forward to going back to Chennai, it been a while since, there were no games there obviously last year, so just playing there again and the experience of the fans there. I think it’s going to be a great game” Faf concluded saying in the video.

RCB yet again looks like a batting-heavy unit despite roping in some quick overseas pacers in the auction last year. The lack of a good experienced Indian spinner in their ranks is a major worry. CSDK also has a concern with Matheesha Pathirana not being available for the first few games with his hamstring injury. Mustafiuzur Rahman who has already joined the side might play from the very first game at the Chepauk.

The CSK vs RCB game starts at 8 pm IST on March 22 after the opening ceremony that kicks off the IPL 2024 campaign.
