Virat Kohli came up with a brilliant gesture for Smriti Mandhana and her teammates after Royal Challengers Bangalore’s historic triumph in the recently concluded Women’s Premier League (WPL).
RCB, on Sunday (March 17), thrashed Delhi Capitals by eight wickets in the final to win WPL 2024. Asked to bowl first, RCB bowled out Delhi for just 113 runs. Delhi were cruising at 64 for no loss at one stage before Sophie Molineux took three wickets in one over to reduce them to 64 for 3.
After Molineux, Shreyanka Patil impressed with the ball and ran through Delhi’s lineup. She picked up four wickets as RCB bowled out Delhi for a modest total. With the bat, RCB chased down the total with three balls remaining and eight wickets in hand. Ellyse Perry top-scored for her team, scoring an unbeaten 35 while Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine also played crucial knocks of 31 and 32 runs respectively.

Smriti Mandhana on call from Virat Kohli:
As the RCB players were busy celebrating the WPL triumph, Virat Kohli decided to join the celebrations. He made a video call to Smriti Mandhana before the rest of the players joined in. The fans hailed the former RCB skipper for his heartwarming gesture.
However, Smriti Mandhana soon made a hilarious revelation about the call. When the RCB captain was asked about the details of the call during the post-match press conference, she hilariously said that she could not hear a word owing to the loud cheer from the crowd. She further said that she would meet Kohli soon.
At the same time, the star batter also revealed that the pep talk given by Kohli to her and her teammates during the last season of WPL helped the team. Kohli gave a rousing speech to the players after they lost their first five games in WPL 2023.
“I didn’t hear anything he was saying because it was too loud, he was like just thumbs up and I just did thumbs up, I will be meeting him,” said Smriti Mandhana.
“He looked happy there was a bright smile. I remember him coming last year and a little pep talk which really helped me personally as well as the whole team. He has been a part of this franchise and I think he has been there for the past 15 years so I could see that happiness on his face but because of the noise I couldn’t hear him, maybe I will chat to him when we go to Bengaluru,” she added.
