Former Australian explosive wicket-keeper batsman Adam Gilchrist brought forward a mind-boggling statistic about Royal Challengers Bengaluru that literally none of us knew about. While speaking in the latest episode of Club Prairie Fire podcast with Michael Vaughan and others, Gilchrist revealed a statistic that speaks volumes about RCB’s over-reliance on star batter Virat Kohli.

As we all know, Virat Kohli is the only player in the Indian Premier League history to have represented only one franchise throughout the 16 years of the league’s existence. Regardless of what it is about, be it loyalty or any other reason but Kohli is a living legend of RCB but the problem there is that he’s the only Indian batsman to have performed with this much consistency.

In these 16 years, Bengaluru have neither won the IPL nor found a local Indian player who can complement Virat Kohli. It is something that they won’t realize just now but when the time comes for Kohli to call time on his IPL career, RCB will regret not finding a replacement. Hopefully, they will.

Adam Gilchrist reveals Rahul Dravid is the only Indian to have the most runs after Virat Kohli

Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan were discussing about some records and that’s when the former asked the latter if he was aware of who’s that other Indian to score most runs for RCB after Virat Kohli. Gilchrist started off by reading out Kohli’s 7263 runs from 16 IPL seasons, which is the most by a batsman in history before throwing the question to Vaughan.

“7263 runs Virat Kohli scored for RCB in 16 seasons. How many runs do you reckon, the next highest run-score of Indian batsman for the RCB?” Gilchrist asked Michael Vaughan on Club Prairie Fire podcast.

To that, Vaughan responded that earlier it used to be Kohli and AB de Villiers who used to run the show for RCB with the bat, and now it’s Australia’s Glenn Maxwell. By the look of his face, it was quite obvious that Vaughan didn’t who that player was but he did say that it would be someone absolutely ridiculous and someone he had no idea about.

Vaughan made an assumption that no batter would have scored more than 1500 runs. “I would say something ridiculous like 1500 by an Indian player. I don’t think there’s many runs come from many of the other Indian players. I’m going 1500,” Vaughan responded.

To that, Adam Gilchrist said that former RCB and RR captain and Virat Kohli’s current head coach in the Indian national team – Rahul Dravid with 898 runs. Gilchrist then fired at RCB for their dependency or overreliance on Kohli.

“Yeah, Rahul Dravid. 898 runs. 16 seasons of IPL cricket and that’s the second highest Indian run-scorer for the RCB. So, there’s your reliance on that man,” Gilchrist concluded.

Virat Kohli gets off to a poor start in the IPL 2024 opener against CSK

Meanwhile, upon his return to competitive cricket last night against the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2024 opener, Virat Kohli didn’t have the best of returns. It was his first match since January and was coming after a 3-month paternity leave until yesterday. As the RCB lost their first game by 6 wickets at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Tamil Nadu, Kohli scored just 21 runs off 20 balls.
