Former Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma delivered a motivational speech following the team's first win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Rohit Sharma praised the team's batting performance and expressed satisfaction with the determination shown by his teammates.

Rohit Sharma was relieved of the captaincy after last year's mini-auction. The 36-year-old was replaced by Hardik Pandya as the skipper of the five-time IPL champions. Hardik received booing from fans in stadiums, including at home, during their first three matches of the tournament.

To make matters worse, the Mumbai-based franchise suffered back-to-back losses in their first three matches. However, the MI team turned their fortunes around with a comfortable 29-run victory over the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, April 7.

Rohit Sharma laid a strong foundation for the Mumbai Indians, partnering with Ishan Kishan for an impressive 80-run opening stand. The former skipper scored 49 runs off 27 balls, hitting three sixes and six fours, as the Mumbai team posted a commanding total of 234 runs in 20 overs.

Following his standout performance, Rohit Sharma received recognition in the MI dressing room. Head coach Mark Boucher addressed the team, congratulating them on the win and presenting Rohit with a special award to appreciate his knock.

It Was A Wonderful Batting Performace - Rohit Sharma

Rohit graciously accepted the award and then shared his thoughts on the day's performance. The veteran opening batter emphasized the importance of collective effort over individual performances and expressed delight in achieving the team's goals.

"I thought it was a wonderful batting performance. It's something that we all have been striving for from game one. Goes to show that individual performances don't matter if the whole batting group can stand up and put their hand up and take a look at the team's goal; we can achieve that kind of a total. You know, that's something that we have been talking about for a long time, and it is something that the batting coach, Mark, and the captain want. Wonderful to see that and like you said, long may that continue," Rohit said.

In IPL 2024, Rohit Sharma has amassed 118 runs in four matches at an average of 29.5 and a strike rate of 171.01. Currently, he stands as the second-highest run-scorer for MI, trailing behind Tilak Varma, who has scored 127 runs with an average of 31.75 and a strike rate of 145.97.

The victory marks a significant turning point for the team, demonstrating their potential as a formidable force. Rohit and Ishan provided a solid foundation, while Romario Shepherd's late-game heroics secured the win. Shepherd delivered a remarkable performance in the final over, scoring 32 runs against Anrich Nortje.
