A heated confrontation stole the spotlight during the 5th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 between the Gujarat Titans (GT) and Mumbai Indians (MI). A violent clash broke out between supporters of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya in Ahmedabad.

The Gujarat Titans secured a narrow 6-run victory against the Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 24th. Young opening batter Shubman Gill registered his first victory as the skipper in this prestigious tournament.

Boos echoed as Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya faced backlash during the toss, having departed the Gujarat Titans unexpectedly after leading them for years. The 30-year-old all-rounder replaced Rohit Sharma, who secured five titles for the franchise.

A video shared by a user on X captured fans engaged in a physical altercation during the match, with two individuals grappling and exchanging blows for undisclosed reasons in the stadium stands, though some onlookers attempted to intervene and defuse the situation.

Hardik Pandya failed to make an impact with both bat and ball in the recent match. The 30-year-old conceded 30 runs in three overs without taking any wickets. The right-handed batter came in at No. 7 and scored 11 runs off four balls, including one four and a six.

Rohit Sharma displayed his batting prowess after relinquishing the captaincy. The veteran opening batter scored 43 runs off 29 balls, with the help of seven boundaries and a six. The former MI skipper missed the well-deserved fifty in his first match of the season.

We Lost Little Bit Of Momentum There – Hardik Pandya

After the match, Hardik Pandya attributed their loss to a decline in momentum during the final overs of the run chase. Pandya also addressed Tilak’s decision not to take a single against Rashid, expressing support for his teammate’s judgment.

“Obviously we backed ourselves to chase those 42 runs, but it was one of those days when we see the score quite less compared to what it could have been in five overs, I think we lost little bit of momentum there. It feels good to be back because this is one stadium where you can enjoy and feel the atmosphere quite lively, and obviously the crowd was full, and they got a good game as well. (On Tilak not taking the single vs Rashid) I think Tilak felt that that was a better idea at that point of time, I completely back him, not an issue, 13 games to go,” Pandya said.

Despite a promising position in the 13th over, the five-time champions fell short of chasing a modest but challenging target of 169 within their allotted 20 overs. The Mumbai Indians team’s fortunes took a downturn after Rohit Sharma’s dismissal against Sai Kishore.

Hardik Pandya smashed a six and a boundary when his team needed 19 runs off the last over. However, Umesh Yadav dismissed the MI skipper on the third ball. Umesh also picked up the wicket of Piyush Chawla as the visitors fell short by six runs in the chase.
