Shubman Gill began his captaincy journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in a memorable fashion. In his first-ever game as Gujarat Titans captain, he led them to a thrilling win over five-time champions Mumbai Indians in the fifth game of the ongoing IPL 2024.
The youngster showed remarkable composure to lead his team to a hard-fought six-run win over the IPL heavyweights. Chasing 169, Mumbai Indians were cruising at 129 for 3 at one stage and were the favorites to win the game. However, the Shubman Gill-led Titans came up with a brilliant performance in the death overs to restrict MI to 162 for 9.
Shubman Gill will be eyeing another big scalp as a captain when he leads his side against another five-time champions Chennai Super Kings in their own backyard on Tuesday (March 26). While Shubman Gill will be looking to avoid committing any mistake against the reigning champions during the game, he made a hilarious blunder just before the start of the contest at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
After winning the toss, Shubman Gill said that his team would be batting first before hilariously changing his decision, saying: “Sorry, bowl, bowl first.” CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was also seen laughing at the mistake of his India teammate.
Notably, Shubman Gill’s ODI opening partner Rohit Sharma is famous for forgetting things and he made a notable blunder at the toss during an ODI game against New Zealand where he forgot his team’s decision and took a 10-second pause before recalling it.

Talking about the game, the Titans have not made any changes to their playing eleven while CSK have made one – bringing in Matheesha Pathirana for Maheesh Theekshana.
“We will bowl first. That (against MI) match was physical and mentally exhausting. Everyone is well rested and well settled with 10 teams playing. We get enough rest time between matches. It shows the character of the team, the way our bowlers bounced back against Mumbai. Playing with the same team,” said Gill at the toss.
