Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja have been playing international cricket for more than 15 years together and are very well-known of each other’s antics.

The two have been good friends playing for the Indian cricket team and in the IPL. Both are well known of each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

A glimpse of their friendship was seen in the CSK vs RCB IPL 2024 opener in Chennai. Knowing how quickly Jadeja rushes through his overs, Kohli asked him to let the batter facing him breathe for a bit. The batter in this case was Cameron Green and Jadeja was bowling the 11th over of the RCB innings.

Green was visibly struggling to time the ball from Jadeja as the left-arm spinner tried to rush through his over. Virat Kohli then brought his experience into play as he took some timeout by talking to Jadeja and allowing Green some time to get his breath back.

RCB posted a below-par total of 173/6 in the end. Thanks to Dines Karthik and Anuj Rawat’s 95-run stand they reached the total after being 78/5 in the 12th over with the dismissal of Cameron Green.

CSK were profesional in the chase. Rachin Ravindra top-scored with 37 in the runchase. A couple of quick 20s from Ajinkya Rahane and Dayl Mitchell took them closer. It was then Shivam Dube (34*) and Ravindra Jadeja’s (25*) unbeaten 66-run stand that helped them win the match.

Since 2008, it was RCB’s eighth defeat at the Chepauk against CSK. Overall, this was the 21st win for Chennai Super Kings against the Royal Challengers Bangelauru. CSK expectedly got off to a win and it was a complete team effort. It was started by Mustafizur Rahman’s four-wicket spell. The batters then backed up the spell by chasing the score down.

Overall, it was the fifth loss for RCB in IPL season openers. Their only win in an IPL season opener came against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2021. Royal Challengers Bangalore yet again got off to a losing start in an IPL campaign. Their over-dependence on their top order was visible in their very first game.

The inexperience in the bowling attack was also very evident. The lack of a seasoned spinner on a Chepayuk wicket turned out to be their biggest weakness. Over the year they had the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Wanindu Hasaranga whom they released. They also had Harshal Patel in their ranks whom they decided to release as well.

CSK, on the other hand, was very clinical in the way they played. They restricted the opposition to a reasonably modest total and in the end, chased it down with aplomb. MS Dhoni despite not being the captain and not coming out to bat orchestrated the proceedings in the game. Ruturaj Gaikwad in his post-match comments agreed that Dhoni’s presence made things easier for him.

“I’ve always enjoyed it (captaincy), never felt it as an additional pressure. I had experience on how to handle it, never felt any pressure, and obviously had Mahi (MS Dhoni) bhai as well. I think everyone in our squad are natural stroke player, I think even Jinks (Ajinkya Rahane) is playing really positively. Everyone knows their roles and which bowlers to take on. Role clarity helps. Two-three things to work on, everyone batted well but I think if someone from the top 3 batted till the 15th over it would’ve been even easier” he said after the game.

RCB plays Punjab Kings next on March 26 while CSK takes on Gujarat Titans on March 26.
