Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were up against each other in the 31st match of the ongoing IPL 2024, and it was a complete thriller game at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on April 16.
In this Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) versus Rajasthan Royals (RR) encounter, two centuries were hammered at the Eden Gardens. However, the bowlers were also impressive in this IPL 2024 clash, but Rajasthan Royals (RR) leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal ended up making an unwanted record.
Chahal's ICC T20 World Cup 2024 aspirations have taken a major hit after Sunil Narine's aggressive onslaught at Eden Gardens on Tuesday. The wrist-spinner conceded 54 runs in his four overs against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Yuzvendra Chahal registers costliest IPL spell in KKR vs RR clash
KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer was only his victim in the KKR vs RR clash at Eden Gardens. Iyer fell victim to Chahal’s delivery, striking him on the back leg in front of the middle and leg stumps while attempting a slog sweep. However, Chahal remains the Purple Cap holder with 12 wickets in seven matches.
But his performance against Kolkata shows that Chahal must focus on bowling at more effective lengths, especially when conditions aren't favorable. Notably, Chahal has the remarkable skill to spin the ball in both directions.

His arsenal includes a diverse array of deliveries, such as the googly, the flipper, and the slider, which makes him a lethal spinner for any team. Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal registered his most expensive spell ever in the history of the IPL during the KKR vs RR clash in Kolkata.
Chahal's figures of 1/54 in his quota of 4 overs surpassed his previous most expensive spell in the IPL, which was 1/51 against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2015. Apart from Chahal, RR off-spinner R Ashwin also delivered a costly performance, recording his second-most expensive outing in the IPL by conceding 49 runs without claiming any wickets against KKR.
R Ashwin also struggles against Kolkata
Ashwin’s most expensive spell still stands at 0/53 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2018. Other RR bowlers who have recorded expensive spells include Shane Warne against the Punjab Kings (1/50), Chahal against the Punjab Kings (1/50), and Ashwin against the Kolkata Knight Riders (0/49).
Notably, Chahal is the leading wicket-taker in the IPL, with 199 wickets in the 152 matches he has so far played in the cash-rich league. He has taken those wickets at an average of 21.47 and an economy rate of 7.71, with his best bowling figures being 5/40 in the IPL.
Speaking about the match, after being invited to bat first, Kolkata posted 223/6 on the board, thanks to Sunil Narine’s brilliant century against RR. Avesh Khan (2/35) and Kuldip Sen (2/46) were the standout performers for RR against KKR at Eden Gardens.
Chasing the target, Jos Buttler’s unbeaten century and Riyan Parag’s cameo of 34 runs helped the Rajasthan Royals (RR) seal the deal in the final over as the tourists crushed the hosts by 2 wickets to extend their winning run in the ongoing IPL 2024.
