"Yuzvendra Chahal was not even in top 2..."- Mike Hesson's big revelation on RCB not going for leg-spinner in auction
Yuzvendra Chahal is one of the best players in the IPL and he has taken the most number of wickets in the league’s history but somehow Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) let him go in the 2022 mega auctions. Chahal has talked about a few times that he was not properly communicated by the franchise that they were not going for him in the auctions. Now, former RCB director of cricket Mike Hesson has revealed the complete details regarding Yuzvendra Chahal’s auction fiasco.
Mike Hesson revealed the reason why RCB was not able to acquire Yuzvendra Chahal in the IPL 2022 auctions where he was purchased by Rajasthan Royals. He said that the franchise planned to purchase back both Harshal Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal but Chahal was not even in the top 2 list of the marquee players. Even after being one of the best players in the IPL, Yuzvendra Chahal was back at No.65 on the list.
“Look Yuzi (Yuzvendra Chahal) was communicated with a huge amount and I know that because I was the guy on the other end of the phone so you know I spoke to Yuzi obviously when we did the initial retention and you know we only retained three players because we felt we wanted to try and buy back both Harshal and Yuzi at the auction. By only retaining three players, it gave us an extra four crores to try and do that and that did not mean that those four crores came off the three retained players,” Mike Hesson told Cricket.com.
“Probably the thing I’m really frustrated about even now is as you said Yuzi is probably one of the top five players of all time for RCB but he was also one of the best ever in the IPL and the fact that he couldn’t make the top two Marquee lists at that time was ridiculous and the fact that he came in number 65, I think it was on the auction list meant that it was really difficult for us to guarantee we were going to get him,” he added.

Royal Challengers Bangalore finished sixth in the last season and as a result, they made some adjustments in the coaching and support staff. Mike Hesson has been replaced by Mo Bobat as the director of cricket and this season the team is looking a bit different after the arrival of players like Cameron Green, Alzarri Joseph, and Tom Curran. RCB is yet to win an IPL trophy and this season they are willing to give their all to achieve the champions title.
RCB is one of the teams that have competed since the tournament was started in 2008 and they have not been able to win the title even after qualifying for the finals three times. The IPL 2024 will begin during the last week of March and is expected to bring some great cricketing competition between 10 strong teams competing against each other.
