Brilliant Captain and a Lovely Batsman! We can add these adjectives to legend Brian Lara who is among the best cricketers to ever play for West Indies. Brian Lara is a former West Indies stalwart who played for the side for 18 years at the end of the 20th and start of the 21st century.
Brian Lara was a left-handed batsman and right-arm spinner. He used to bat in the top and middle order and later became a fabulous skipper for the side. Even after his retirement, Brian Lara was quite active in coaching and commentator roles.
Family and Personal Life
Brian Lara was born on May 2, 1969, to Bunty and Pearl Lara. He had 10 siblings and grew up with his favorites- brothers Michael, Winston, and Lindon. He is unmarried but has two daughters with girlfriends - Syndey and Lyndon.
Early and Domestic Career
Brian Lara started his cricket journey in childhood with coach Harry Ramdas. He got a break into the national team Trinidad and Tobago in 1987.
After continuous success for three years, he finally made his grand entry into the West Indies national team after three years. He also played for domestic teams like Northern Transvaal, Warwickshire, and South Rocks.
International Career
Brian Lara made his debut for West Indies in November 1990 with an ODI game against Pakistan. He went on to play for the national side till 2007, with his final ODI game against England ICC ODI World Cup.
During his 17-year-long successful journey, Lara went on to play a total of 131 ODIs and 299 Tests. He shattered 11953 runs in the Tests with a top knock of 400. It is still the highest-ever knock by a batsman in Tests. In 299 ODIs, he mustered 10405 runs at 40+ average and 19 tons.
Notably, T20I trends started after Lara retired from all forms of cricket so he could never enjoy the franchise cricket. However, scripted himself as the best WI skipper and among the best in international cricket.
