Outstanding Opener and Classic Captain! These phrases truly define Graeme Smith's legacy for South Africa. He was one of the best openers for the team and among the most dangerous captains in Tests.
Graeme Smith was a left-handed batsman who used to play as an opener. He played for South Africa for almost 12 years till 2014. He played over 100 Tests and 100 ODIs for the national side but could not win any ICC title under his captainship. However, he had a very dangerous side under his leadership in Tests.
Family and Personal Life
Nicknamed Biff, Smith was born on February 1, 1983, to Graham and Janet Smith in Johannesburg City, South Africa. He grew up with his brother GavTivh Smith. He married Romy Lanfranchi in 2016 and the couple has a son named Sebastien. He also has two kids from her earlier wife- named Carter and Cadence.
Early and Domestic Career
Graham Smith got a break into South Africa's domestic circuit in 1999 when the Gauteng team picked him into their squads. He switched many sides after his debut, playing for teams like Hampshire, Western Province, and Cape Cobra. He also played for English County Somerset once and Surrey twice.
International Career
Graeme Smith made his international debut in March 2002 with a Test against Australia. He was a powerful man in both Tests and ODIs during his career and played for the team till 2014.
During his career, he played 117 Tests, 197 ODIs, and 33 T20Is for the side. He hit 9265 runs in Tests, 6989 runs in ODIs, and 982 runs in the shortest format. Averaging 47+ in Tests, 37+ in ODIs, and 31+ in T20Is, Smith did a decent job across all three formats with the bat.
He also shattered 37 international tons- 27 in Tests and 10 in ODIs. He also hampered 5 double tones in Tests and 38 and 47 fifties in Tests and ODIs.
Franchise Career- 1
Graeme Smith played in the Indian Premier League and represented Rajasthan Royals in the first three seasons from 2008 to 2010. Later, he played for Pune Warriors India before bidding goodbye to the league. Notably, the South African skipper did not play in any other franchise league.
Post Retirement
Smith did not leave his association with cricket even after retiring from cricket. He donned the role of coach for the national side and also became the Director of South Africa cricket.
