He was one of the members who helped Sri Lanka to win the ICC T20 World Cup in 2014. He is among the biggest legends to ever play cricket for Sri Lanka.
Jayawardene was a right-handed batsman who played for Sri Lanka for almost 19 years. He used to play in the top order and was slammed with more than 10,000 runs in both Tests and ODIs.
Family and Personal Life
Mahela Jayawardene was born on May 27, 1977, in Colombo City Sri Lanka to Serenath and Sunila Jayawardene. He had only one brother Dhishal who died at a younger age.
He has been married to Natasha Malakanda since 2021. He has a daughter Sansa with his first wife. In his childhood, he loved to play lawn tennis and golf too.
Early and Domestic Career
Jayawardene made his entry into domestic cricket in 1995 for Sinhalese Sports Club. He went on to play for the side till his retirement in 2015. He also played for Wayamba Elevens for five years (2007-2012). He was a member of Sussex and Somestic in England County Cricket.
International Career
Mahela Jayawardene made his debut for Sri Lanka in 1997 with a Test match against India. He went on to play for the national side till March 2015, when he faced South Africa in his last ODI match. He represented the national team in 149 Tests, 448 ODIs, and 55 T20Is.
The right-handed batsman mustered 11814 runs in red-ball cricket, 12650 runs in the 50-over format, and 1493 runs in T20Is. He also smacked 34 Test tons and 19 ODI centuries. He is among the few batters who smack a ton in the T20Is too.
Franchise Career
Mahela Jayawardene was quite an active man in franchise cricket. He was part of Kings XI Punjab in the first three seasons. Later, he went on to represent Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011 and Delhi Daredevils from 2012 to 2013.
He was also quite active in the Caribbean Premier League, Big Bash League, and Pakistan Super Kings and represented teams like Jamaica Tallawahs, Adelaide Strikers, Dhaka Dynamites, and Karachi Kings.
