Maiden IPL Ton! These three words are enough to provide the name of the player this page is about. It is none other than Manish Pandey; who holds the record for being the first Indian player to storm a ton in Indian Premier League. Manish Pandey grabbed the achievement in IPL 2009.
Manish Pandey is a right-handed batsman who has also played a few games for India in the past. He has played more than 50 international games but is not part of the current Indian Team. He can also bowl right-arm medium pace but has focused only on his batting in his career.
Early and Personal Life
Manish Pandey was born in Nainital City in Uttarakhand in September 1989 to GS Pandey and Tara Pandey. His father was in the Indian Army and hence, he attended his initial school at Kendriya Vidyalaya.
He grew up with his sister Anita Pandey. In 2019, he married Tamil Actress Ashrita Shetty. His family moved to Karnataka where he graduated from Jain University in Bengaluru.
Domestic Career
Manish Pandey started his early career with childhood coach J J Arun Kumar. Later, he also joined Karnataka State Cricket Association with the back of his brilliant batting. In 2008, the right-handed batsman was part of the Under-19 Indian Team that played World Cup in Malaysia. It was a big boost for his career.
International Career
After continuous performance in the Indian Premier League and domestic circuit for years, Pandey finally made his international debut in 2015 when he was picked for the Zimbabwe ODI series.
He also made his T20I debut in the same series. However, never got a chance to play any Test match for India. Interestingly, the Karnataka batter has played 29 ODIs and 39 T20Is for Team India.
He has slammed 1 century across 68 international games and 5 half-centuries. He held a poor average of 33+ in ODIs but a superb 44+ average in T20Is.
However, his strike rate remained less in both, 90+ in ODIs and 126+ in T20Is. He last played for India in the July 2021 tour of Sri Lanka.
Franchise Career and Legacy
First Indian to smack century in Indian Premier League- these phrases will always define the legacy of Manish Pandey's career. The right-handed batsman has a flourishing IPL career where has played a total of 171 games and accounts for over 3800 runs. He has played for various IPL teams but is part of Kolkata Knight Riders now. He also won the IPL 2024 title with the team.
He has slammed 22 fifties but could not replicate his magical ton once again in IPL. As a result, he didn't get many opportunities. However, he is among the few gemstones who have worn the India Team jersey. Also, he is among the rare players to play 50-plus games for the Indian Team.
