Marvelous and Mysterious! These two words truly define Muttiah Muralitharan who is the highest wicket-taker of all time in international cricket. Due to his complex bowling action, he was always a mysterious bowler for many and ruled the pitch with his spin attack.
Muttiah Muralitharan is a former Sri Lanka cricketer who played for the side for almost 20 years. He was a right-arm spinner who used to bowl off-spinner and retired with the most number of wickets in international cricket.
Muralitharan was also part of the Sri Lankan team that won the ICC ODI World Cup 1996 and finished as runners-up in the 2007 and 2011 editions. He has many impeccable bowling records to his name.
Family and Personal Life
Muttiah Muralitharan was born on April 17, 1972, in Kandy in Sri Lanka to Sinnasamy and Lakshmi Muttiah, who were a Hindu family living in Sri Lanka. He grew up with his three brothers in Sri Lanka. He tied the knot with R Madhi Malar and the couple has a son Naren and daughter Krisha.
Early and Domestic Career
The Sri Lanka stalwart started his early training under childhood coach Sunil Fernando. He made his debut in the domestic circuit for the Tamil Union Team in 1991 and represented the same team till 2009. He also played for England County Lancashire, Kent, and Gloucestershire but only in a handful of seasons.
International Career
Muralitharan made his international debut for Sri Lanka in 1992 and went on to play for the side till the ICC ODI World Cup 2011 Final in 2011. Over the years, he was a key member of the Test and ODI teams. He played 133 Tests and 350 ODIs for the national side.
In 230 Test innings, the off-spinner captured a total of 800 wickets at an average of 22.73. This is the most number of wickets by any bowler in Tests.
In 341 innings in ODIs, he stole 534 wickets at 23.08. He also clinched 22 ten-wicket hauls in Tests and 10 five-wicket hauls in ODIs. He only featured in 12 T20Is for Sri Lanka and got 13 wickets.
Franchise Career
Although Muralitharan did not play many T20I games for Sri Lanka, he was quite active in franchise cricket. He was part of Chennai Super Kings in the first three editions of IPL from 2008 to 2011 and also won the title in the 2010 edition.
Later, he played for Kochi Tuskers Kerala (2011) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2012-2014). He also played in the Big Bash League and Caribbean Premier League and played for teams like Melbourne Renegades and Jamaica Tallawahs.
