Spectacular and stunning batter! These words suit Shahid Afridi, who is among the greatest batsmen to ever play for Pakistan. He was a dangerous hard-hitting batsman who also held the record of the fastest century (100 off 37) for almost 19 years.
Shahid Afridi is a former Pakistan cricketer who played for the national side from 1996 to 2018. He was a right-handed batsman and right-arm leg spinner, who also grabbed the limelight with his bowling on many occasions. He is an active commentator now but also active in leagues for retired players.
Family and Personal Life
Shahid Afridi was born on March 1, 1980 in Khyber Agency in FATA in Pakistan. He grew up in a joint family with four brothers and five sisters. He is married to Nadia Afridi and they have five daughters. One of her daughters Ansha Afridi is married to Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi.
Early and Domestic Career
Shahid Afridi commenced his domestic career with Karachi state in 1995 before making it to the national side in 1996. He later joined the Sindh Team in the domestic level 2007 season onwards.
International Career
Shaheen Afridi had a long career in the Pakistan team, playing from 1996 to 2018. He made his international debut in 1996 during an ODI game against Kenya. He played for the Pakistan team till 2018 when he faced West Indies in his last T20I match.
He played only 27 Tests for Pakistan, scoring 1716 runs and with 5 centuries and 8 half-centuries. He played a record total of 368 ODI games and slammed 8064 runs at an average of 23.58. In 99 T20I games, the former Pakistan skipper slammed 1416 runs at a stunning strike rate of 150+.
PSL Career
During the final leg of his international career, Shaheen Afridi was quite active in the Pakistan Super League. He played for Peshawar Zalmi in the first two seasons in 2016 and 2017.
Later, he played for Karachi Kings in the 2018 season. The all-rounder moved to Multan Sultans for two seasons 2019 and 2021. In his last PSL season in 2022, he played for Quetta Gladiators. Interestingly, he was not active in foreign franchise leagues and focussed only on the Pakistan Super League.
Shahid Afridi was quite a powerful spinner and captured 48 wickets in 27 Tests, 395 wickets in ODIs, and 98 wickets in 98. Hence, he was considered a lethal spin all-rounder for the Pakistan team.
