Umar Akmal is a former Pakistan player and wicketkeeper-batsman who played for Pakistan from 2009 to 2019. Umar Akmal was a regular middle-order batsman for the side in the white-ball formats.
Akmal was a right-handed batsman and a permanent wicketkeeper. He was known as an aggressive batsman and was often criticized for his poor wicket-keeping skills.
Family and Personal Life
Umar Akmal was born on 26 May 1990 in Lahore city of Punjab, Pakistan to Mohammad Akmal Siddiqui. He grew up in Lahore with his two brothers Adnan Akmal and Kamran Akmal who were also cricketers.
Notably, he is the cousin of Babar Azam. He married Noor Amna in 2014 and the couple has two sons and one daughter. His wife is the daughter of former Pakistan leg spinner Abdul Qadir.
Early and Domestic Career
Umar Akmal started his domestic career with Northern Gas Pipelines team in 2007. He played for the same team till 2017. From 2008 to 2015, the wicketkeeper-batsman also played for Lahore Lions. He made his international debut in 2009. After his International ban in 2019, he played for Central Punjab for four years till 2022.
International Career
Umar Akmal played his first-ever international game for Pakistan in August 2009 with a test match against Sri Lanka. He went on to play for Pakistan till 2019 and played his last game against Sri Lanka in the T20 encounter.
During his 10-year-long career, Omar Akmal played a total of 16 Tests, 121 ODIs, and 84 T20I. His code 13 runs at 35 + average in Tests with one century and 6 half centuries. In ODIs, he slammed over 3100 runs with two tons and 20 fifties.
Across 84 games in T20s from 2009 to 2019, and 1690 runs at 122 + strike rate and 8 half centuries. In 2019 he was accused of not reporting a fixing approach and convicted for corruption charges. As a result, his career ended after 2019.
Franchise Career
Umar Akmal was quite active in franchise T20 leagues around the world. The wicketkeeper batter was part of two franchise leagues - the Caribbean Premier League and Pakistan Super League. He played for multiple teams in these leagues like Guyana Amazon Warriors, and Trinbago Knight Riders.
