Babar Azam Smashes Brilliant Half-Century In Final League Match
Peshawar Zalmi posted a total of 147 runs with the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. Babar Azam scored his fifth half-century of the season, while Rovman Powell contributed 30 runs off 18 balls as the only other batter to surpass the 20-run mark for Peshawar.
Speaking during the PSL, Babar Azam expressed his dissatisfaction with batting at No. 3 for the national team in T20Is. Babar said that he prioritized Pakistan’s needs, even though he personally wasn’t satisfied with the decision.
“I wasn’t under any pressure to score runs as an opener [for Zalmi]. I don’t take pressure of anything. It was Pakistan team’s demand at the time. I did that for Pakistan. If I was asked individually, I wasn’t satisfied with the decision to bat at one down position. However, I did that for Pakistan,” Babar was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.
Having previously opened alongside wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, the 29-year-old transitioned to the No. 3 position during the recent New Zealand series. Azam and Rizwan maintain their position as the leading opening pair in T20Is, accumulating 2,883 runs in 61 innings at an impressive average of nearly 49.
Following his transition to the No. 3 position, the prolific batter scored three consecutive half-centuries in the initial three T20Is against New Zealand. Despite his remarkable batting performances, Pakistan faced defeats in four matches and conceded the series 1-4.
Babar, now back in his preferred opening role for Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL 2024 season, has been displaying exceptional form with the bat. As the leading run-scorer, he has amassed 498 runs at an impressive average of 62.25 and a striking rate exceeding 148.
