Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025

The Indian Premier League or the IPL is India's main T20 competition and is undoubtedly the most popular and successful T20 league in the world.

The IPL is the most followed T20 league in the world and Cricket Addictor is your one-stop destination for every information related to the competition. We cover the tournament in detail and provide exclusive first-hand coverage of all the latest IPL news.

After India's historic triumph at the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, the BCCI founded the league. The first edition of the IPL was held in the year 2008 with eight teams participating.

The teams were - Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Capitals), Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab), now defunct Deccan Chargers, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals.

Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural edition against all the odds. Despite being one of the underdogs, they went on to win the tournament under the captaincy of the legendary Shane Warne. Deccan Chargers won the second edition with a win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru before Chennai Super Kings won the third edition.

In 2011, the BCCI decided to expand the league by adding two new teams - Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India. However, Kochi were disbanded after just one season while Pune pulled out of the league after the 2013 season. In 2012, Deccan Chargers were also disbanded and replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In 2016, two new teams were added once again but only for two years after Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended. They were replaced by Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant. In 2022, the BCCI decided to expand the league once again by adding two new teams - Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.

Since 2022, the IPL has been a ten-team competition. As per the new IPL team list, the ten teams are - Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Lucknow Super Giants, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians hold the record for most IPL titles. Both teams have won the league five times so far. While Mumbai Indians were the first team to achieve the feat in 2020, Chennai Super Kings replicated that feat in 2023.

The only other team to win the tournament more than once is Kolkata Knight Riders. The Kolkata-based outfit has won the IPL three times so far including in 2024. The other teams to win the IPL are - Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Titans.

Of the seven teams that have been playing in IPL since 2008, only three teams are yet to win the trophy - Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. These three teams have appeared in an IPL final at least once but have yet to win the tournament.

Talking about other IPL stats and records, Virat Kohli is the highest run-scorer while Yuzvendra Chahal holds the record for taking most wickets.
