Rohit Sharma is an Indian cricketer who is also the captain of the national team in Test and ODI formats. In domestic cricket, he represents Mumbai while in IPL, he plies his trade for Mumbai Indians. He also led Mumbai Indians from 2013 to 2023.
Under Rohit's captaincy, India reached the final of the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup in 2023 and won the Asia Cup. In 2024, India won the T20 World Cup under his captaincy, thus ending a long 17-year wait for the trophy. Rohit retired from T20Is after the World Cup victory.
Rohit's record as a batsman is even more impressive. He has been one of the best if not the best openers in the world especially in white-ball formats in the last decade or so. No opener has scored as consistently as him in international cricket in recent years. Here we are taking a look at the numerous Rohit Sharma’s records in all the formats.
Rohit Sharma records in Tests:
Rohit Sharma's journey in Test career began in 2013, six years after his debut in international cricket. He hit the ground running in international cricket by smashing centuries in his first two Tests against West Indies.
However, things did not go well for quite some debut after that impressive debut series and it took him almost four years to score his third Test century which came in 2017.
His Test fortunes finally changed in 2019 when he was promoted as an opener and he has not looked back since then. Since 2019, the right-handed batsman has hit nine centuries in the longest format of the game.
- Rohit scored 177 runs on his debut in Tests and became the 14th Indian cricketer to hit a century on Test debut.
- He scored 177 on his debut which is the second highest score on debut by an Indian. Rohit's former opening partner Shikhar Dhawan holds the record for scoring 187 against Australia.
- In 2019, Rohit created history by becoming the first Indian to score 100-plus runs in each innings of the Test - 176 & 127 - in his debut game as an opener. He achieved the feat in the Pune Test against South Africa.
- In the very next game, Rohit hit his maiden Test double century (212) and became only the third Indian cricketer to score back-to-back centuries in consecutive Tests.
Rohit Sharma records in ODIs:
Rohit Sharma made his ODI debut in 2007 against Ireland as a middle-order batsman. He struggled to cement his place in the team in the early years before finally turning things around in 2013 when he was promoted as an opener. Here is Rohit Sharma’s ODI record list:
- Highest individual score - 264. Rohit became the first cricketer to breach the 250-run mark in ODIs with his monumental 264-run knock against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in November 2014.
- First batsman to hit more than one double century in ODIs. He has three double centuries in the 50-over format. It could very well be a Rohit Sharma unbeatable record.
- Most fours in an innings - Rohit hit a staggering 33 fours during his 264-run knock.
- Most runs at a particular batting position: 264 at No. 2.
- Most runs from fours and sixes in an innings - 186 runs during the 264-run knock.
- During his maiden double century in ODIs which came against Australia in 2013, he had hit 16 sixes which was the world record for most sixes struck in an innings at that time. The record was later broken by former England captain Eoin Morgan who hit 17 sixes against Afghanistan.
- Fastest Indian to 5000 ODI runs.
- Most 150-plus scores in ODIs - 8.
- Most centuries in ODI World Cups - 7.
- Most centuries in a single edition of the ODI World Cup - 5 (2019 World Cup).
Rohit Sharma records in T20Is:
Rohit made his debut in T20Is during the 2007 T20 World Cup. He was a key member of the winning Indian team. Rohit started his T20I career as a middle-order batsman too before being promoted as an opener. Here is Rohit Sharma’s T20I record list:
