Former Indian captain and legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has lauded Shreyas Iyer’s recent performances in international cricket.

The 72-year-old believes Shreyas Iyer will not be dropped anytime soon because he has managed to score enough runs to keep his place in the squad.

There is no dearth of quality in Indian cricket, as evidenced by the fact that the country is planning to field two distinct teams at the same time, as it did last year. Last year, while the Indian men’s cricket squad was in England for a five-match Test series against the hosts following the World Test Championship final, a second-string Indian team led by Shikhar Dhawan played a limited-overs series against Sri Lanka in the island nation.

Even in the unavailability of veteran players, the Indian squad no longer appears to be vulnerable and is strong enough to defeat any opponent, wherever. India is also without captain Rohit Sharma, great hitters Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah, and ace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the ongoing five-match T20I series against South Africa. Despite this, they have looked impressive and put on some consistent performances.

Sunil Gavaskar praised the 27-year-old Mumbaikar’s recent performances in the shortest format of the game, saying that Iyer’s recent performances have been such that he does not have to fear being dropped anytime soon.

“Shreyas Iyer has scored runs. I do not think he needs to be concerned in the first two games. He also had a fantastic season earlier this year versus Sri Lanka, scoring half-centuries in nearly every game he played. As a result, his position is not in jeopardy “Sunil Gavaskar said.
