Suryakumar Yadav, a star middle-order batsman for India, broke multiple records during the first T20I of the three-match series against South Africa.

The right-handed batter eclipsed Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan’s record for the most sixes by any player in a calendar year in addition to becoming the best run scorer for India in T20Is in a year.

Suryakumar Yadav, an Indian middle-order hitter, was once again on fire in the opening Twenty20 encounter of the three-match series between India and South Africa. The right-handed hitter, who is 32 years old, carried on from his last performance against Australia on Sunday, September 25, in Hyderabad, and struck his ninth fifty in a Twenty20 match.

He continued to be unbeaten on 50 runs from 33 balls and assisted India in recovering from the early dismissals of captain Rohit Sharma (0) and number three batsman Virat Kohli (3).

Suryakumar Yadav has a total of 45 sixes to his name in 2022:

The first ball of the seventh over, which was bowled by Anrich Nortje (1/32) and in which the Mumbaikar entered the crease, demonstrated his skill right away. On the second and third balls he faced, he smashed the express fast bowler for two consecutive sixes, relieving some of the pressure the opposing bowlers were trying to put on him.

India scored 17 runs in the first six overs of the powerplay, the fewest ever for an Indian side in a T20I cricket match. However, Surya assumed leadership from that point on and, together with KL Rahul (51 not out off 56 balls), contributed 93 runs in 10.3 overs to help India complete the mark in 16.4 overs with the loss of just two wickets and take a 1-0 series lead.

The record for the most sixes in a calendar year was broken by Surya with his first six of the evening by Pakistani batter Mohammad Rizwan. Rizwan had hit 42 sixes in 2021, but Surya has since pulled ahead of him and has now recorded a total of 45 sixes in 2022.

With the help of 45 sixes and 63 fours, he scored a total of 732 runs in the 21 matches he played this year, setting a record for the most runs scored by an Indian batsman in a calendar year. He surpassed Shikhar Dhawan, the veteran opener. 2018 has seen 689 runs scored by the left-handed batter.
