Former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels that the young Madhya Pradesh pacer Avesh Khan can become an excellent all-format bowler for the India National Cricket Team.

Avesh Khan, who is currently part of India’s squad for the 5-match T20I series against South Africa, did a good job in the first T20I match against the Temba Bavuma-led side.

On the day where over 400 runs were scored the right-arm pacer gave away just 35 runs in his four-over quota. However, he was unable to bag a wicket for his team and India lost the match despite scoring 211 runs while batting first.

During a discussion on Star Sports, Lucknow Super Giants mentor Gambhir, who has worked with Avesh at LSG, said that the Madhya Pradesh pacer has got a lot of talent and he has a big heart to bowl the difficult overs for his team. He elaborated:

“This bowler has a lot of talent, he has pace, a big heart to bowl the difficult overs. But I will want to see him improve further in every match. He is a young bowler, only the IPL should not be his goal, the T20 World Cup is coming ahead.

“He has the attitude that a fast bowler should have and the most important thing is that he is still young and wants to learn. If he continues to work hard, he can become an excellent bowler, not only in T20s but in all three formats.”

If you have the pace, then you feel confident in all three phases – Gautam Gambhir

The Lucknow Super Giants mentor was questioned about Avesh Khan’s ability to bowl in all three phases of a T20 game to which he replied by saying that the ability comes with pace because a bowler feels confident in all three phases of the game if he has got the pace in his deliveries. He said:

“That ability comes with pace. If you have the pace, then you feel confident in all three phases. We have seen a lot of bowlers who do not have the pace that Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna and Jasprit Bumrah have, then you have to give them the extra protection.”

Gambhir further talked about the competition between LSG pacers Avesh Khan and Mohsin Khan and said that the good performance by one player pushes the others to do well. He asserted:

“It is a good thing if one player pushes the other, then you can bring out a better performance from the other player, which you want. Your squad is a good one when every player is pushed, the other player comes and pushes you and Mohsin Khan did that exceptionally well.”
