These Are Potential Leaders To Be Groomed For Test Captaincy- Chetan Sharma Names 3 People The Selectors Have An Eye On
Team India’s selection panel chairman Chetan Sharma revealed that they are currently keeping three names in mind to be groomed as Test captains in the near future.
Rohit Sharma was named as the official Test captain and he now leads the team in all three formats. However, Rohit cannot be the long-term option as he is in his mid-30s and so, Chetan named three others – KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah as ones to keep an eye on.
Rahul was the captain of the Indian team in the second Test against South Africa last month. Pant has led Delhi Capitals (DC) while Bumrah was named as the vice-captain of the Test team.
“…and if such a big cricketer comes forward, if such an experienced player becomes a captain, then automatically, the things that we as a selection committee want, grooming captain under Rohit, will be a tremendous thing for us.”
“We made KL the captain in South Africa. Bumrah was the deputy in South Africa and again for the Sri Lanka series. In West Indies T20s, we had Rishabh as vice-captain. These are potential leaders to be groomed under Rohit. Yes, it is difficult to say who will be the next captain but we are sure a name will emerge,” Sharma said in the virtual press conference.
Meanwhile, the Test squad for the 2-match series against Sri Lanka was announced, with Rohit leading the way. Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ishant Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha were all excluded from the team while Priyank Panchal was included.
