Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is expected to miss the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy four-match Test series against Australia as well as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season. Former India cricketer Maninder Singh believes that Ishan Kishan should be considered as a replacement for Rishabh Pant in the Indian team setup in the coming months.

Ishan Kishan was not selected for the T20 World Cup 2022 and made his comeback in the third ODI against Bangladesh with a stunning double-century of 210 runs off 131 balls with 24 fours and 10 sixes. The southpaw broke Chris Gayle’s record for the fastest double century in world cricket history and became the fourth Indian to score a double hundred in ODIs, after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Rohit Sharma.

Ishan Kishan Has That Knack Of Big-Match Player – Maninder Singh

In an exclusive interview with My Khel, Maninder Singh believes that Ishan Kishan is the ideal candidate to replace Rishabh Pant across all formats.

“If Rishabh Pant isn’t available for selection due to the unfortunate accident, he met with, then I believe the team management should pick up Ishan Kishan (who is also a left-handed batter) for that role across all formats. He’s an ideal candidate for Team India if Pant is not around,” said Maninder on My Khel.

“It is the job of the team management and the selectors to reward players of such potential and I strongly believe Ishan Kishan has that knack of a big-match player. I believe if there is one player who’s nearby Rishabh Pant’s potential across formats, it is Ishan Kishan,” said Maninder.

With Wriddhiman Saha not in the scheme of things, the 23-year-old is competing with another gloveman, KS Bharat, for the Test cap.

Ishan Kishan will next be seen in action against Sri Lanka in a white-ball series comprising three T20Is and as many ODIs. The Men in Blue will play the first T20I at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, January 3. Hardik Pandya will lead the team in a shorter format, while Suryakumar Yadav will serve as his deputy.
